The challenge
The store was doing steady traffic and getting products into carts, but too many of those carts never became orders. On a real phone, the buying journey felt heavy: pages shifted as they loaded, the cart took a beat to respond, and the checkout asked for more than it needed. None of it was broken — it was just enough friction, in enough places, to lose people who were ready to buy.
The constraint: this is a live store doing daily business. Any change had to go in without downtime or risk to existing orders and integrations.
The approach
Rather than guess, I mapped the actual journey — product to cart to checkout — on real devices, and noted every point where a ready buyer had to wait, re-orient, or re-enter something. Each issue went onto a single list, ranked by likely impact against effort, so we fixed what mattered first instead of everything at once.
- Reserved space for images and dynamic blocks so the layout stopped shifting.
- Prioritised the above-the-fold content and the key font so the first view arrived quickly.
- Trimmed and reordered the checkout so the fastest path was the obvious one.
- Tightened cart interactions so a tap felt instant, not delayed.
My contribution
I owned the technical side end to end: the audit, the prioritisation, and the implementation directly in the client's theme — working alongside their existing plugins and integrations rather than replacing them. Everything shipped incrementally, with each change verified against the real checkout flow before moving on.
The outcome
The buying journey became faster to load, steadier on screen, and shorter to complete — and it went in without interrupting daily operations. The store now has a clean, documented baseline it can keep improving from.
